Vera Avis Poss Power

Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Will M. Power; brother, Lynwood Joseph Billy Poss; sisters, Shirley Irene Power and Lily Juanita Tot Cassity; and great granddaughter, Rhiannon Combs.

MARSHALL Vera Avis Poss Power entered into eternal life with Jesus Christ and into her heavenly home on Wednesday, January 20, 2016. Mrs. Power was 97 years of age and died in the home she loved on the Karnack Highway in Marshall, Texas, where she had lived for over 60 years. Funeral services to celebrate the life of Vera Avis Poss Power will be conducted in the Sullivan Chapel at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 23, 2016. Interment will follow at Algoma Cemetery North in Marshall, Texas. Visitation will be Friday at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m.

Pallbearers representing branching family units include Bill Power, Claude Lewis, Gene Power, Juan Nava, Marc Cassity, Reavis Hall, Rick Fisher, and Rick Hill.

As a fruit of her faith in Jesus Christ, Vera was kind and generous serving those around her with devotion and care. She loved her family dearly and was there for all of them. She prayed for everyone she knew. Flowers delighted her and she took pride in her lawns and gardens. Vera enjoyed travel and was able to make a number of trips within the United States and abroad. A lifelong passion was Texas A&M athletics and she could be found every Saturday in the fall cheering them on in person at Kyle Field, or via radio (in the early years), or television broadcast.

Honorary pallbearers will be Andy Hoflich, Bill Kalla, Bo Capps, Bob Power, Brandon Byars, Dick Fisher, Eddie Joe Power, Gary Heath, Gary Post, Jr., Harry Power, Jim Fitz, Jonathan Howeth, Lee Kevin Fisher, Malcolm Hill, Mark Jackson, Pope Fisher, Jr. Robert Fisher, Roland Green, Scott Smith, Scott Power, Steven Hill, Steven Wheeler, Steven Wheeler, Jr. and William Dair Power.

Vera was born June 24, 1918, in Timpson, Texas, to Leonard Joseph Poss and Ada Ellis Pinson Poss. Along with two sisters and a brother, she grew up in rural Shelby County Texas during the depression and never forgot the lessons of those times. She graduated from Timpson High School in 1935. After graduation, she moved to Marshall where she met Will Martin Power. They were married on December 23, 1938, and shared a happy life together for 61 years.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Marshall, Texas, or the General Scholarship Fund at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry Martin Power and Kathy of Houston, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Avanell Oates and Sam of Marshall, Texas; grandsons, Harold Rex Combs and wife Lisa of Richmond, Texas, Brian Power Oates and wife Amy of Versailles, Ky., Kelly Oates and wife Jill of Spicewood, Texas, and Michael Oates of Denver, Colo.; granddaughter, Leia Stevens and husband Benji of Dripping Springs, Texas; great-grandsons, Carson Combs, Samuel Walker Oates, Cameron Oates and Connor Oates; great-granddaughters, Chelsea Combs, Alana Oates and Morigan Stevens; and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Along with her husband, Vera owned and operated Power Brothers Grocery and participated in the political life of Harrison County in a variety of ways. After her husbands death, she efficiently managed the familys business and real estate interests for decades. Vera was a charter member of First Baptist Church of Marshall and was a faithful serving member for 74 years. Her membership in the Alethean Sunday School Class was a source of joy. For over 64 years she was a member of the Aurora Chapter #799 of the Grand Chapter of the Texas Order of the Eastern Star. She served as a president of the Texas A&M Mothers Club in Harrison County.
