Verna Smith was born on April 26, 1899 in Eastland, Texas to parents A.B. Smith and Caledinia Smith. At the age of one the family was living in Center, Texas. Verna graduated from Timpson High School in 1916, At the age of 20 in 1919 she married Horace Franklin Goforth. In 1930 the couple were living in Wellington, Texas. At the age of 91 Verna passed away on August 12, 1990 in California.

Verna G Goforth, 91, died Sunday, August 12, 1990 in the Wellington Care Center.
Mrs Goforth was born April 26, 1899 in Eastland, Texas. Her parents were Henry Smith and Bell Matthews Smith. She came to Collingsworth County in 1905 with her family. She married Frank Goforth, Sr on March 11, 1917 in Wellington. They moved to California in 1941 and came from there to Amarillo in 1950.
Mrs Goforth was a member of the Coulter Road Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Leroy Goforth of Hacienda Heights, CA; Denzil Goforth of Buena Park, CA; and Bob Goforth of Wellington; one brother, Elbert Smith of Fresno, CA; one sister, Ann Guynes of Fresno, CA; seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in 1989; one son, Frank, Jr. in 1918; and by two sisters and two brothers.
