Austin Winfred Mayes - Class Of 1936 VIEW PROFILE

Austin Winfred Mayes was born on September 20, 1918 to parents  Samuel and Beatrice Mayes.  He had at least two siblings, Edgar and Edna.  Austin graduated from Timpson in 1936.  He was in the Army during WWII serving as a TSTG.  Austin married Agnes Truitt.   Not much is known of Austin other than he died on Sept. 22, 1982 and was laid to rest in the Restlawn Memorial Cemetery in Vidor.

Larry Hume (Hume)

Born in Timpson, Texas to Addie Beatrice Jane Wagstaff and Samuel Virgil Mayes.  He grew up with brother Edgar (also a WW II Veteran) and sister Edna Julia Mayes-Powers. He graduated from Timpson High School with the class of 1936.  Austin enlisted in the Texas National Guard on February 1, 1939 and served until entering active duty on November 25, 1940.  He and Agnes L. Truitt were married July 18, 1940 in Shelby County.  Austin departed the United States for Europe in April 1944.  He became missing in action three months later in France.  The family received a letter from him dated September 2, 1944 from a German Prisoner of War Camp stating he was “OK”.  He was released in March 1945 and returned home to Timpson the following month.  Honorably discharged July 27, 1945.  Austin remained in the National Guard reaching the grade of First Lieutenant.  He and wife Agnes settled in Vidor, Texas having a son, Austin, Mayes, Jr.  Austin passed on September 22, 1982 at the age of 63 from heart failure.  He was a retired Highway Patrolman, Texas Department of Public Safety.  He, his wife and son are buried In Restland Memorial Park, Vidor, Orange County, Texas.  He was a member of the Texas-Golden Triangle Chapter, American Ex-Prisoners of War and the Vidor Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8246.
