Muriel Holmes (Clarke) - Class Of 1954 VIEW PROFILE

Muriel Holmes (Clarke)

Muriel J. Clarke (Holmes) was born in Center, Texas to Albert and El Vina Holmes. She was the oldest of four girls, all of whom attended Timpson Public Schools.
The family attended First Baptist Church of Timpson and one of Muriel’s mentors was Sunday School teacher Mrs. Nina McClendan. Her first jobs were as a carhop at E & L restaurant and the Tomato Shed.
Muriel was a very popular student at Timpson High and made many friends. She was a member of the Pep Squad, Chapter President of FHA, Class Favorite, and Class Reporter. Her drive to succeed resulted in high honors throughout high school and eventually earned her the honor of THS Class of 1951 Salutatorian.
In 1956, while attending Scott and White Nursing School in Temple, she met and married Army Sergeant Ron Clarke. Muriel was capped in 1957 and began the busy life of a nurse and army wife. She soon added the title of mother to her list of accomplishments when Dorothy and Albert were born in 1957 and 1960 respectively.
The Army offered the young family many opportunities to travel the country and even abroad. Muriel even served as a school nurse in Orleans, France from 1964-67.
Her nursing career resulted in many accolades and highly respected positions. Among the positions she filled, the most notable were Head Nurse at Shelby General in the 1960s, Shelby General clinical coordinator, Good Shepherd Hospital Director of Nurses, and Good Shepherd Home Health Supervisor.
Muriel passed away in April of 1995 in Longview, Texas. She is survived by her daughter and son, their spouses, 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
