Born on October 20, 1928, in Timpson, Texas, he was the second of eight children, born to Carlos G. and Lucille Hancock. Jim grew up on the family farm where hard work and the joy of singing with his family and church shaped his early years.
A 1946 graduate of Timpson High School, Jim served as Texas State President of the Future Farmers of America. The next year, he married his beloved wife, Sophia Jane Hancock in Logansport, Louisiana. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and service, raising three sons: James Steven, Donald Ray, and John Mark.
Jim began his career with Mobile Oil Co., advancing from roustabout to Construction Foreman in South Texas, while studying petroleum engineering by correspondence. Later, he founded Hancock Construction & Services in Freer, Texas. Beyond his professional achievements, Jim was deeply involved in his community, serving on the Duval County Grand Jury, and as a Director of the Brush Country Bank.
A devoted servant to his faith, Jim was a Deacon in numerous Baptist churches across Texas and an active member and speaker for the Gideons. In retirement at Pinecrest Retirement Center in Lufkin, he continued to serve others as President of the Residents’ Association, Sunday School teacher, and volunteer at the local food bank. His unwavering faith and kindness touched all who knew him.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Sophie; his son, John Mark; his parents; brothers, Calvin and Alvin; and sister, Tommie.
He is survived by his sons, Steve and wife Diane, Don and wife Nancy; nine grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; brothers, Chuck and George; and sisters, Francis and Patricia; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
