Obituary for Mrs. Nan Oney
Funeral services for Mrs. Nan Oney, 89, of Carthage, Texas will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday January 13, 2026, at the Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Richard Reed and Mr. Taylor Oney officiating. Burial will follow in the Timpson Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Monday night at Hawthorn Funeral Home.
Mrs. Nan Marie Oney was born February 27, 1936, in Timpson, Texas. She passed this life surrounded by her family, January 10, 2026, at her Carthage, Texas home. Nan was the younger of two children born to the marriage of Ruby Cozette Bowlin and Thomas Shaw Towns. She was raised and schooled in Timpson graduating with the Timpson Class of 1953.
She married Lovis Lavell Gary in 1955 who would precede her in death after 8 years of marriage. She married Merlin Sparks who later preceded her in death also. Mrs. Oney spent her career in retail working for Birdwell’s Department Store, The Collection and Walmart all of Carthage. Nan was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Carthage where she sang in the choir and loved the Friendship Sunday school class. She loved cooking, sewing and traveling with family and friends and shopping was a favorite pastime. She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands and a daughter-in-law, Vickey Ogden Gary.
Mrs. Oney is survived by her devoted children, Rev. Dale Gary and wife Mary of Carthage, Greg Oney and wife Cheryl of Carthage, Nancy Hastings and husband Kirk of Norman, OK, and Paul Oney and wife Sandy of Clayton; brother, Thomas Towns of Carthage; grandchildren, Russell Gary and wife Jamie, Jason Gary and wife Jennifer, Amanda Roten and husband Skip, Jason Wray and wife Heidi, Abigayle “Abby” Hastings, Kaitlyn Hastings, Taylor Oney and Emily Oney; great grandchildren, Jackson, Jenna, Tanner, Sadie, Elijah, Carlie Jo, and Aidan; many other relatives and friends.
Serving as pallbearers will be, Russell Gary, Jason Gary, Jackson Gary, Elijah Peavy, Taylor Oney and Kaitlyn Hastings.
