Obituary

Funeral service for Charles Samuel Rhodes, 88, will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, July 11, 2022 at Timpson Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Levi Cohorst and Bro. Joe Walker officiating.  Interment will follow at Timpson Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.  Visitation will be held prior to the service, beginning at 1:00pm.

Charlie was born on June 14, 1934, the son of Dan and Sarah Rhodes.  He grew up in the small community of Buena Vista in Shelby County and attended Timpson High School.  Charlie spent his childhood being taught the importance of God and family.  He was a wonderful example of a son, husband, father and grandfather.  He taught his family the same values as they grew into adults and made special time to spend with the grandchildren so they would learn the same things.  Charlie was very proud of his children and their families and overjoyed to spend every chance he had with them.

As a young man, Charlie learned to work cows and rebuild tractors.  His love of being on the farm became his livelihood and he enjoyed his daily life doing exactly what he wanted to do.  His beloved community of Buena Vista was of utmost importance to him.  He was a master historian and made sure to pass on the history of the community and could answer most any question about the area or the people within.  He was also instrumental in acquiring signs marking the location.  He made it a priority to visit the residents of Buena Vista as well as old friends and those in nursing homes or unfortunate enough to not be able to get out.  Charlie was also very devoted to his church and was one of the first members of Timpson Missionary Baptist Church, of which he helped build alongside his dad.  He loved summertime because it brought some of his favorite foods including vine ripe tomatoes.  He would go to Chris’ and help himself to all the veggies he could pick and Debbie would keep him stocked on fresh turnip greens, corn and hot water cornbread!  In his latter years, Charlie could be found visiting his friends at Cadell’s and the feed store.  His love of life and family, old fashioned values and complete devotion to Christ will forever live on in the hearts of everyone who ever had the blessing of knowing Charlie Rhodes.

Charlie is survived by his children Deborah Jordan & husband, Marvin of Tenaha, Rebecca Walker & husband, Tony of Joaquin and Chris Rhodes and wife, Jena of Timpson; grandchildren, Grover Anthony, Krystal Sowell, Rylinn Walker, Griffin Walker, Bryan Rhodes, Kate Rhodes, Keni Jo Biggar, April Campbell and Colt Jordan; great grandchildren, Elana Anthony, Gatlin Anthony, Hunter Anthony, Julia Sowell, Julian Sowell and Jack Sowell.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 33 years, Lois Rhodes; grandson, Bradley Rhodes; parents, Dan and Sarah Rhodes and stepson, Marvin Earl Biggar.

The Rhodes family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Pine Grove Nursing Home for the love and care they gave to their father.
