Funeral services for Bernell “Bernie” Tate, 84, of Gilmer will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, October 18, 2014 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Longview with Pastor Dennis Bragdon officiating. Burial will follow at 2 PM at Corinth Cemetery near Timpson, Texas. Services are under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview. Mr. Tate passed away Tuesday afternoon in a local hospital. The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM on Friday.
Bernie was born on April 21, 1930 in Panola County, TX to Bernard and Maude Belle Tate. He proudly served his country in the US Air Force during the Korean War as a flight Engineer and was stationed in North Africa for 18 months. After his service, Mr. Tate filled out 1 job application with City Service Oil, later becoming Occidental Oil, and landed a job that turned into a 42 year career. He received numerous awards during his career including many for no lost time or accidents. He retired in 1992. Bernie was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and had many wonderful friends. He was a jack of all trades who loved fishing, camping, skiing, the beach and the ocean. He loved his family dearly and loved teaching the kids all kinds of sports. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 40 years, Madrenne Tate; his sons Terry, Tony, Timothy and Travis Tate; his step children Wayne Wigley, Charlene Murphree, Cathy Ann Smith, and Gail Petty; his sister Billie Jane Sturdivant; his brother David Tate, 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
