She is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Vina Holmes of Timpson, sisters Muriel Clarke of Longview and Wanda McDonald of Lone Star.

Evelyn Bernice Holmes was born in Timpson, TX on March 11, 1946, the youngest of four girls.  She graduated from Timpson High School in 1964, received her Teacher’s Certificate from Stephen F. Austin in 1967 and Master’s of Education from SFA in 1984. Mrs. Galbreath taught elementary school in Marshall, TX at SFA Elementary and Dogan Elementary in the late 60’s – early 70’s.  In 1978, the family moved to Tatum, TX, where she taught first grade until her retirement in 2000.  She taught hundreds of students during her career and will be remembered for her gentle and patient demeanor.   She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Tatum and the Cowboy Church in Henderson in recent years.

After retirement, Bernice volunteered as a tutor for East Texas Literacy Council, aiding non-English speaking adult students.  She also volunteered several days a week at the Samaritan House in Tatum, which aids low-income families with gently used clothing and household items.

Bernice and Jimmy loved traveling during their retirement, especially trips with family, cruises and National Parks.  Bernice had other hobbies such as gardening, quilting and reading.  She also enjoyed weekly lunches with her retired teacher friends.

I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.  Psalm 34:4-5
