Larry Hume (Hume)

Born in Shelby County, Texas to Thurza Ellen Cheney and James Thomas “Jim” Crocker.  Three brothers, Claude Hurst, Joseph Council (World War II Veteran) and Ernest Lloyd. Graduated from Timpson High School with the class of 1938.

Twenty-one months before the United States entered World War II Charles enlisted in the US Army on January 5, 1940. The book “The Men and Women in World War II from Shelby County” described his military service “Trained in San Francisco, California and Washington State.  Served in the European Theater of Operations in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany.  Wounded in Italy, 1944.  Discharged 1945  [June 22]. Awarded Purple Heart, G.C. [Good Conduct] Medal”. He was also awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three bronze service [campaign] stars.

Following his being wounded, the Timpson Daily Times, March 19, 1945 published a letter he sent to his parents that read in part “I am O. K. and not having very much to do at present; just waiting for my back to get well before going back to duty. I don’t think that it will be long before I will be back with my company. Don’t worry about me for I was only hit by a small piece of shrapnel that went just under the skin”.

After discharge William returned to Shelby County where he registered for the selective service on June 25. His registration card noted his residence as Route 1, Timpson, age 27, and unemployed as he was just discharged. Physically he was described as white, five foot seven inches tall, 136 pounds with blue eyes and blonde hair.  The following month he and Miss Virginia Frances Cayson were wed in Mooreville, Mississippi where they made their home. They raised three children, William, Dennis and Betty.

Bill died on December 27, 1991, one day before his 74th Birthday. He was buried in the Angleton Cemetery, Angleton, Brazoria County, Texas. Wife “Jin” joined him in 2012. Day is done, God is nigh.
