Loretta Tolar Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home on Apr. 22, 2026.

Loretta Beth Tolar, of Palestine, Texas, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 20, 2026, at the age of 77.

She was born on January 12, 1949, in Center, Texas, to Zannie Lee Bussey and Glaython Esther Galbreath. Loretta spent her entire life in Palestine, a community she loved deeply and served faithfully through her work, her church, and her family.

Loretta dedicated 46 years to teaching in Slocum ISD, where she shaped the lives of countless students with patience, wisdom, and a steady, caring presence. Teaching was more than a profession to her, it was a calling, and she carried that calling with quiet pride and devotion.

A lifelong member of First Christian Church, Loretta's faith was at the heart of who she was. She lovingly played the piano for church services for many years, sharing her gift of music with her congregation. She began playing at a young age, and the piano remained one of her greatest joys, a way she expressed both her faith and her love for others.

At home, Loretta found happiness in the simple, meaningful things in life. She loved baking sweets to share, filling her home with warmth and comfort. Whether she was at the piano, in the kitchen, or caring for her family, she brought thoughtfulness and care to everything she did. She was truly a woman who could do it all, an excellent student, a gifted musician, a devoted mother, and a homemaker who created a place of love and stability for those around her.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Thomas Darren Bush.

Loretta leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory: her son, Kevin Bush and wife April of Palestine; her daughter, Jodi Bainum and husband Shane of Palestine; her sister, Janet Wagstaff of Elkhart; her grandchildren, Kai Bainum, Reid Bainum, and Cole Bush, all of Palestine; her nephew, Jay Wagstaff of Elkhart; along with many other relatives and dear friends whose lives she touched.

A memorial service will be held at First Christian Church on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. officiated by Rev. Jordan Byrd. Services are in the care of Herrington / Land of Memory Funeral Home.

Loretta will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her quiet strength, her servant's heart, and the love she so freely gave. Her legacy lives on in her family, her students, and all who were blessed to know her.
