Vernon L. "Buck" Childs, Sr.

GALVESTON - Vernon L. "Buck" Childs, Sr., 81 of Galveston died Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m., Saturday, March 13, 2004, at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home with the Reverends Brett Maisel, Ken Walker, and David Tarr officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Memorial Park in Hitchcock. The family will receive visitors 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Childs was born September 1, 1922, in Rusk County, Texas to Vaughn and Evie Nix Childs. He was a graduate of the Timpson High School and attended Business College in Henderson, Texas. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army-Air Corp during WWII and a reserve after the war. He trained B-17 bomber groups that helped win the war. Mr. Childs married the love of his life Dorothy in 1950, and began their family here in Galveston as the Co-Owner operator of Childs Motor Company with his late brother, Glen Childs, Sr. in 1956. 

Mr. Childs was longtime affiliated with the Bible Baptist Church where he was active in all areas of the church and especially happy to have taught Sunday School for over 30 years. He was a member of the Gideons International, Galveston Island Camp, where he provided untold numbers of the Word of God to his customers and those he came in contact with. 

He was a member of the York Rite AF & AM, Tucker Lodge # 297, Commandery #001 Knights Templer of Texas, a member of the Board of Directors of Moody National Bank for 19 years, a sponsor of the Childs Motors Little League Team for over 40 years. He was a hardworking man who loved his Lord, his family and all those in need, giving selflessly of his time and talents to everyone who needed him.

Preceded in death by his parents, a son, Terry W. Childs, and a brother, Glen W. Childs, Sr., he is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy E. Childs of Galveston; daughter, Virginia M. Stackhouse and husband Bill of Apopka, Florida; sons, Bob Childs and wife Carol of Galveston, and Gary Childs and wife Kim of Jacksonville, Texas; daughter in law, Dawana Childs of Galveston; sisters, Sally Sutton and husband Gene of La Marque, and Betty W. Maisel and husband Gus of Galveston; sister in law, Betty L. Childs of Galveston; grandchildren, Keri Grenier, Elycia Harker, Captain Craig Childs U.S. Army- Tikrit, Iraq, Brad Childs, Matt Childs, Chris Childs, Betsy Childs, Steven Childs, and Scott Childs; great grandchildren, Amanda Harker, Karli Harker, Stepheni Smith, Megan Grenier, Ashley Grenier, Eric Childs, and Josh Childs; aunt, Maude Birdwell of Nacogdoches, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, many friends and business acquaintances. 

Pallbearers will be James Matthews, Brad Childs, Matt Childs, Chris Childs, Ronny Beesley, Glen Childs, Jr., Leslie Hopkins, and Luke Rogers.

Memorials may be sent to the West Isle Little League.
