BLANCHE PAULINE GOULD, 78, slipped away peacefully early Saturday, May 24, after a brief stay at Memorial City Hospital in Houston. "Dolly," as almost everyone knew her, came into the world on Feb. 9, 1925, in Haslem, Texas, the fourth of six children born to William Ira and Lela Corry Holmes. She grew up in nearby Timpson and was a graduate of Timpson High School. On March 10, 1942, she married George M. "Sarge" Gould in Bossier City, La., and spent the next 18 years making a home wherever his military career took them and raising their three children. The Goulds settled in Houston's Spring Branch area after Sarge retired from the Air Force in 1960. He began a second career with the Postal Service, and Dolly worked in the courtesy booth at Epps Food Market. After her husband passed away Oct. 4, 1988, she sold the family home and moved to her "little house" in northwest Houston, where she spent her remaining days. Although a lifelong Baptist, for the past 16 years Dolly had been actively involved at St. Timothy's United Methodist Church, where she was cherished by a host of friends young and old, and will be greatly missed. In addition to her husband, Dolly was preceded in death by her brothers, Russell and Hubert Holmes; by her sister Ercel Corley and her husband, Homer; by a sister who died at birth; and by her beloved sister-in-law, Elizabeth Holmes. She is survived by her son Bill and his wife, Kathy, of Houston; daughter Cathey Spies and her husband, Bruce, of Cypress, Texas; son John, of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; and by her sister Jo Mathis and her husband, Robert, of Tyler, Texas. Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Beth and Maggie Gould; Meredith, Karl and Erik Spies; and David and Lynn Gould; one great-grandson, Hunter Gilbert, of Dallas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family expresses its thanks to the Houston Fire Department ambulance crew who responded so quickly in Dolly's hour of need, to Dr. Richard Pohil and to the nurses and staff at Memorial City Hospital for her compassionate care, and to her many friends for their love and support during this difficult time. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Waltrip Funeral Home, 1415 Campbell Rd. Services will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, at St. Timothy's United Methodist Church, 8787 N. Houston-Rosslyn Rd., with the Rev. Nancy Kellond, pastor, officiating. Dolly will be laid to rest with Sarge at Houston National Cemetery.
