I took off work early yesterday to go to Margaret Eakin's visitation. I just had to. The Eakin's were our neighbors out in the Corinth community for many years--until we moved to Longview when I was in the 8th grade. I think my fondest memories of my life (except for the birth of my children and grandchildren) were spent in that community.
I loved the Eakin family. The kids were like brothers and sisters to us. Some of them were at our house by daylight and didn't go home until bedtime. Tony, Gregory and Monica were around us the most. As Gregory reminded me last night, we didn't have any REAL toys, we had homemade toys. We were really poor moneywise, but really rich--family and friend wise.
We had so much fun! I remember Margaret's sewing! She was so talented and giving. She gave my sister, Patricia, and I, all of Becky and Janeice's clothes they had outgrown or didn't want anymore. We were so proud to get them! Gregory will probably remember this, we had an old car seat (as in a whole seat, not a baby chair) sitting on our screened-in back porch. Margaret would bring the clothes over, and Patsy and I would sit there and hem the dresses and BIG full-gathered skirts, so we could wear them. My Mama and Margaret would visit and sit with us while we sewed. I remember Margaret and Mama laughing (Margaret was quite a character). I remember one red velvet dress that belonged to them with little round, gold buttons sewed down the bodice that Margaret had made--oh, how I loved that dress. Thank God, those girls were little! We weren't ashamed to wear hand-me-downs, we were thankful to have something new and different to wear. I remember in grade school, we had a May Pole show. The girls had to wear a leotard and tutu made of netting. Margaret made mine, and I have never felt so special or pretty as I did that night on the football field in Timpson. I remember it was cold, though. In one of our plays, I had to be a tree. I was too bashful to be play a major part. We had to wear brown pants for a trunk and a shirt with green leaves sewn on it. Again, Margaret furnished the green leaves and sewing. I had to be a Dutch girl once in a play. Margaret made the Dutch girl hat and apron. I loved that woman so much, and so did my Mama. My Mama is losing her memory and in a nursing home, but when I asked her Sunday if she remembered Margaret Eakin, she said, "I remember her well, she was soooo good to me!" I could tell, she really did remember.
I enjoyed talking to Gregory so much last night. It's like I went back in time. Then, Tony came up and started talking to us. They were always such fun; I didn't realize how much I had missed them. We fought, played, laughed and loved more than we knew at the time. I've missed you, Eakin kids. I'm sorry that I didn't get around to talking to John Prycer, but he probably didn't remember me anyway. He was my older brothers' ages. I wish I could have one more day and evening with John Prycer, Becky, Janeice, Tony, Gregory and Monica with my remaining brothers and sister like a family reunion. I would love to just have a picnic and sit and talk like we used to, underneath the oak and sycamore trees in our front yard and share our memories.
Kiddos, I loved your Mama and Daddy. May they rest in peace, and may you all know what a difference they made in MY life. Love you all.
